About Me When I think back to when I was a child, I never thought of becoming a Counsellor. In fact I’m not sure I even knew what a Counsellor was! I always felt I wanted to do something with business and this was the career I followed until a few years ago when a life changing event caused me to re-evaluate my future. I struggled to make sense of anything whether it was relationships, friendships or myself. I knew that I had to find someone to talk to who didn’t know me and who could help me get my life back. First I saw a counsellor that took notes on everything that I said and there was very little interaction let alone empathy, so I guess you could say that I had a bad experience. I was there for 4 sessions and never returned, then after a few months of feeling the same I decided to give it another go and checked the BACP website out and found a counsellor in my area. This time I went along for an initial session to see if we got on and asked questions. She was warm, friendly, and I warmed to her instantly. She was empathic and very focused on me. I looked forward to each session because of what I was learning about myself, although sometimes I dreaded the painful issues that I had to confront I knew that day by day I was feeling better about what had happened and also better about myself. Qualified and professional Counsellors will always have had therapy themselves as part of their training and will be in and out of therapy for the rest of their career when they feel it necessary. This is how I know how difficult it can be to take that first step and how hard it can be to continue. I now not only empathise with people when they say to me that they see no way forward and sometimes no future, I understand it as that is how I had once felt. So with the help of my family, friends and an empathic and effective Counsellor I began to see my life choices, it was gradual .... one day at a time. I truly believe to be a good Counsellor, you have to be a lot of things, empathic, non-judgemental, sincere, honest, patient, tolerant and an attentive listener, the list goes on and on, but most of all you have to provide the hope that it does eventually get better and it certainly did for me!
